A shared love of good design, honest materials and beautifully made furniture.

West & Reid was founded by Malcolm Weir and Tom Jarvis out of a shared love of furniture, wood and the craft of making.

From the beginning, we wanted to offer something different from the traditional English kitchen aesthetic. We were drawn instead to the warmth and optimism of mid-century modern design, the quiet simplicity of Japanese and Scandinavian interiors, and furniture that allows the natural character of its materials to speak for itself. 

That point of view has shaped the company we have become. It has also brought us together with clients who have a discerning eye, care deeply about design and want a home that feels personal rather than prescribed.

OUR STORY

From a first conversation to West & Reid.

Malcolm and Tom were introduced by a mutual acquaintance and quickly discovered that they were both passionate furniture makers with a shared love of mid-century modern design. They spent many hours that day talking about furniture, craftsmanship and their ideas about design. That first conversation led to the two of them collaborating on projects and, before long, to the formation of West & Reid.

In the beginning, the company was just the two of us, and we did everything. We designed the furniture, made it ourselves and installed it in our clients’ homes. As the scale and ambition of our work grew, so did the team around us. 

Today, West & Reid is a close-knit team of designers, furniture makers and installers, working together from our studio and workshop in Oval. The company has evolved, but the passion for furniture, craftsmanship and thoughtful design that brought us together remains at the heart of everything we do.

OUR WORKSHOP

Designed and made by us in South London.

Every West & Reid kitchen and piece of furniture is made by our own team in our workshop in Oval.

Keeping design and making under one roof is fundamental to how we work. Our designers and makers speak to one another throughout each project, resolving details together and drawing on the knowledge and experience of the whole team. An idea is never simply handed from one department to another. It develops collaboratively, from the first drawings through to the final stages of making and installation.

It also means we remain closely connected to everything that carries our name. We know how it was designed, who made it and why each detail is there.

A PERSONAL SERVICE

Hands-on directors, personally involved throughout.

Malcolm and Tom are personally involved in every West & Reid project. As directors of the company, we are also our clients’ first point of contact and remain the people they speak to and rely on throughout the process.

We meet every client at the outset, listening carefully to their ideas and working alongside our designers to bring them to life. Where appropriate, we visit the property to understand the space, its architecture and its wider context. We then personally project-manage each commission through design, production and installation.

We are in the studio and workshop every day, overseeing what is being designed and made. We attend the installation, inspect the finished kitchen and remain responsible for every final detail through to snagging and sign-off.

We are meticulous by nature and, it is probably fair to say, perfectionists. From the first conversation to the completed kitchen, responsibility for the project stays with us. It is a genuinely personal service, with the directors of the company directly involved and accountable for the result.

OUR TEAM

West & Reid is a small company made up of people who genuinely care about what they do. Our two designers bring creativity, experience and careful thought to every project. They work closely with our clients and collaborate with Malcolm, Tom and the workshop team to turn their ideas into considered, practical designs.

Our workshop team are skilled furniture makers and craftspeople, united by a shared pride in doing things properly. They are central to the quality of our work and to the continuing development of the company. Their ideas, experience and attention to detail shape every project we produce.

We work closely, solve problems together and stop to eat lunch around the same table each day. It is a simple ritual, but an important one. It reflects the kind of company we want West & Reid to be: collaborative, welcoming and built around people who know and value one another.

OUR Approach

Made for the way you live.

A bespoke kitchen should be more than a collection of cabinets. It should respond to the architecture of the house, make everyday life work better and feel as though it belongs.

We work closely with our clients throughout the process, bringing together their ideas and our experience of design, materials and making. Because we control the entire journey, we can consider everything - from the overall composition of the room to the feel of a handle or the grain running across a series of doors.

We make a limited number of kitchens each year. This allows us to give every project the time, attention and collective thought it deserves.
